it only went on in my mind.it only went on in my mind.Maṇḍabya, a spiritual companionMaṇḍabya, a spiritual companionand friend of mine was a great seer.and friend of mine was a great seer.

Bound to a deed in a past life,Bound to a deed in a past life,he got impaled on a stake.he got impaled on a stake.I nursed himI nursed him

and brought him back to health.and brought him back to health.Asking leave, I returnedAsking leave, I returnedto my own hermitage.to my own hermitage.

A brahmin friend of mine,A brahmin friend of mine,bringing wife and child,bringing wife and child,came to me, all three of them,came to me, all three of them,

as my guests.as my guests.As I exchanged greetings with them,As I exchanged greetings with them,seated in my own hermitage,seated in my own hermitage,

the boy threw a ballthe boy threw a balland angered a viper.and angered a viper.Then the boy, looking which wayThen the boy, looking which way

the ball had gone,the ball had gone,touched the viper’s headtouched the viper’s headwith his hand.with his hand.

Angered at his touch,Angered at his touch,the cobra, relying on its potent poison,the cobra, relying on its potent poison,completely enraged,completely enraged,

bit the boy right away.bit the boy right away.When bitten by the viper,When bitten by the viper,the boy fainted on the ground.the boy fainted on the ground.

It made me distraught,It made me distraught,the pain became as if mine.the pain became as if mine.Comforting the parents,Comforting the parents,

in their suffering and sorrow,in their suffering and sorrow,I made the first act,I made the first act,the original, supreme declaration of truth:the original, supreme declaration of truth:

‘For just seven days with a mind of faith‘For just seven days with a mind of faithI led the spiritual life seeking merit.I led the spiritual life seeking merit.My life since then,My life since then,

for fifty years or more,for fifty years or more,I have lived unwillingly.I have lived unwillingly.By this truth, may he be well!By this truth, may he be well!

May the poison die! May Yaññadatta live!’May the poison die! May Yaññadatta live!’As I declared this truth,As I declared this truth,the boy trembling with poison,the boy trembling with poison,

awoke and got up,awoke and got up,the brahmin youth was well.the brahmin youth was well.There is no one to equal my truthfulness:There is no one to equal my truthfulness:

this is my perfection of truth.”this is my perfection of truth.”
